My inspiration came from my grandmother's magazine clippings she's kept over the years. Most of the pieces were vintage, classic styles and silhouettes. I wanted to create a more contemporary, laid back version in my collection
My focus in this collection is professionsal adaptive wear for people who have sensory processing disorder (SPD). Sensory Processing Disorder is a neurological disorder in which the sensory information that the individual perceives results in abnormal responses. Most people with SPD experience hypersensitivity to sound, sight, and especially touch. (Rodden, 2016) Most people with SPD struggle to find clothing that they can wear. Tags, hand of the fabric, seams, and closures can mean someone's daily function. There is a gap in the fashion industry for this market. My objective is to provide a line not just for people with SPD, but for everyone who enjoys hidden comfort in their garments. Sensory processing disord er affects around 5 to 16 percent of school aged children. (Bunim, 2013). At least 1 in 20 people have SPD (About SPD. (n.d.)).
I chose more contemporary, neutral colors that could be paired with almost everything. I also chose fabrics that had a softer hand and were more stretchy. I only chose closures that were nonmetal, not heavy, and not difficult for people with motor function issues (such as velcro). I also used elastic waistbands, drawstrings, and removable belts that would be used for more comfort and ease.
